L’Orchestre National d’Ile de France fait swinguer la Cité de la musique.
New York est la ville du swing. Pas seulement le swing du jazz ou de la comédie musicale qui ont par exemple fait résonner Broadway pendant des années. New York est aussi la ville de la vibration. Les hommes s’y sont jetés avec une frénésie frisant l’hystérie, trouvant dans les gratte-ciel la parfaite image de leur ivresse d’espace.
La musique américaine cherche la même ivresse. Elle est faite d’empilement de sons aussi divers que surprenants : bruits de la ville, fragments d’airs populaires, réminescences de scènes cinématographiques…

Google is officially a verb.

Google Inc.'s eponymous search engine became a sanctioned part of the English language Thursday, when "google" — with a small "g" — earned an entry among the 165,000 or so terms in the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary.

The definition: "to use the Google search engine to obtain information … on the World Wide Web." As in, "Let me google that."

Linguists said google entered the lexicon especially quickly. It reached the pages of the dictionary just five years after its first known public reference as a verb in a New York Post article. Usually, it takes 10 to 20 years for words to enter everyday use, if they make it at all.

Branding experts say such currency is hardly a blessing for a corporate trademark. Just ask the makers of Xerox copiers, Band-Aid bandages, Kleenex tissues or Jello gelatin.

"I think it's more of a curse," said Rob Frankel, an Encino consultant who has advised Walt Disney Co., Honda Motor Co. and Sony Corp. on branding issues.

Companies go to extremes to prevent their trademarks from falling into common parlance. A word that's in everyday use no longer enjoys legal protection, Frankel said.

Le penny américain va-t-il disparaître ?

A penny used to buy a loaf of bread, but in an age of inflation and affluence, the coin is slowly sliding into monetary obsolescence.

For the first time, the U.S. Mint has said this year that pennies are costing more than 1 cent to make, thanks to higher metal prices.

That idea of spending 1.2 cents to put 1 cent into play strikes many people as "faintly ridiculous," said Jeff Gore, of Elkton, Md., founder of a group called Citizens for Retiring the Penny.

"The penny is going to disappear soon unless something changes in the economics of commodities," said Robert Hoge, an expert on North American coins at the American Numismatic Society.

Still, Gallup polling has shown that two-thirds of Americans want to keep the penny. There's even a pro-penny lobby called Americans for Common Cents.

With many Americans, as with Ms. Finch, there's a timelessness to their thoughts on patriotism. In Monitor interviews conducted during the July 4 weekend, words such as "love" and "loyalty" toward America flow easily, as do expressions of belief in the ideals of freedom and democracy. Perhaps it should come as no surprise, then, that the latest global survey on "national pride," a close cousin of patriotism, found that Americans ranked No. 1 among the 34 democracies polled.

"We've always been at or near the top," going back at least 50 years, says Tom Smith, author of the report released last week by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

Une statue de Thomas Jefferson à Paris

France marked the Fourth of July by honoring Thomas Jefferson with a statue and Rosa Parks with a sports complex. The mayors of Paris and Washington did the honors.

"This is a great monument to a great American in a very important place in Paris," Washington Mayor Anthony Williams said as the bronze, 10-foot-tall statue of Jefferson was unveiled on the Left Bank of the Seine River, near the Solferino Bridge.

The United States celebrates its Independence Day on July 4, a day of patriotic celebration and family events throughout the country. In the words of Founding Father John Adams, the holiday would be “the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, … . It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

The holiday is a major civic occasion, with roots deep in the Anglo-American tradition of political freedom.

Today in history: Texas Annexation

On June 23, 1845, a special session of the legislature of Texas voted in favor of annexation by the United States. For almost ten years, Texas had been an independent republic. The leaders of the republic first voted for Texas to be annexed in 1836, soon after it gained independence from Mexico, but the U.S. Congress was unwilling to admit another state which permitted slavery. Sam Houston, military commander during the Texas War for Independence from Mexico and the first President of the Republic of Texas, had been a strong advocate of annexation.

In 1845, the political climate proved more favorable to the request for statehood, and, in 1846, the Lone Star flag of the Republic of Texas became the flag of the twenty-eighth state in the Union. A unique provision in its agreement with the United States permitted Texas to retain title to its public lands.

I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. Brown University Jabberwocks at the American Cathedral in Paris

The Brown University Jabberwocks will be performing at the American Cathedral in Paris at 8:30 PM on Friday, June 2nd (Tickets: 20 euros, 10 euros for students).

A rare public concert of American collegiate a cappella by one of the best such groups in the nation. The Rev. Jonathan Huyck humbly offers that assessment as a loyal alumnus of the group! He also plans to join them onstage for a song or two. William Buthod, the Cathedral’s Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, will open the show with half an hour of modern piano music.

Four Continental Army flags go up for auction at Sotheby's in New York

The flags are considered some of the most significant relics of American
history. Only 30 Continental Army flags are known to exist - most damaged and of
unsure provenance - while these four flags are in pristine condition.

The first lot, estimated at between $1.5 million and $3.5 million,
contains the earliest surviving American flag with a field of 13 red and white
stripes, captured in Pound Ridge, N.Y., on July 2, 1779. The second lot,
estimated at between $2.5 million and $6.5 million, consists of the only intact
set of flags of a Revolutionary War regiment, captured in Waxhaws, S.C., on May
29, 1780.

While Sotheby's has divided the lots, historians and vexologists would
like to see the flags kept together, as they have been for more than 200 years
by the descendants of the lieutenant colonel who captured them, Banastre
Tarleton, who became a general and went on to write a definitive history of the
Revolutionary War. A compelling reason to keep them together is that one flag
contains the 13 stripes and another the 13 stars, the elements that came
together to form the American flag.

The flags are distinguished because of the information available on them.
They are described in a war inventory made in Philadelphia. It indicates that
they were likely made by Betsy Ross, Mr. Redden said. The stars on one of the
flags are five-pointed, which is a Ross signature.

Patrick Henry was born on May 29, 1736, in Studley, Virginia. He was a brilliant orator and an influential leader in the opposition to British government. As a young lawyer, he astonished his courtroom audience in 1763 with an eloquent defense based on the doctrine of natural rights, the political theory that man is born with certain inalienable rights . . .

At the second Virginia Convention, on March 23, 1775, in St. John's Church, Richmond, he delivered his most famous speech. As war with Great Britain appeared inevitable, Henry proclaimed:

Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace —
but there is no peace. The war is actually begun!
The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are
already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear,
or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me,
give me liberty or give me death!

Réouverture au public le samedi 20 mai 2006 du Musée de l'Orangerie (Métro Concorde) où l'on pourra admirer après plusieurs années de fermeture les oeuvres impressionnistes de Claude Monnet, dont les fameux "Nymphéas" (Bâtiment côté Seine, dans les jardins des Tuileries, entrée la plus proche par la grille donnant place de la Concorde).

The Times of London to Launch U.S. Edition

News Corp.'s London-based newspaper The Times announced Friday it will
launch a U.S. edition next month as part of a push to make the paper an
international brand.

The U.S. edition will go on sale on June 6 via subscription and at more
than 2,000 retail outlets across New York and New Jersey.

"This is a key moment in the development of The Times as an
international media brand," said The Times Editor Robert Thomson, who helped
orchestrate a major U.S. expansion of the Financial Times when he worked at the
Pearson PLC-owned paper.

"We have seen a large increase in our Times Online readership in the
U.S. and the appearance of the newspaper on the streets of New York marks the
next stage in our print and Web expansion," Thomson added.
